Get to know Andrew Peters in 2 minutes.
I’m going to have to go through this quick.
Buckle up.
I'm a 6th generation farm kid—the essential qualification to any career endeavor.
If you can work on a farm, you can do anything.
I spent the first year of my career selling life insurance in a city where I knew two people, one of which did the same thing.
I made $734 (sold to myself) until a co-worker took me under his wing long enough to solidify my conviction that I hated selling insurance.
Moving right along.
Fun fact: Job titles are deceiving.
I was the Chief Storytelling Officer at Luxottica (the eyewear and eyecare company based in Milan, Italy) which meant I found myself with a millennial’s dream job.
I led the global storytelling of Luxottica’s non-profit OneSight in conjunction with brands like Rayban, Oakley, Sunglass Hut, Lenscrafters, etc.
Remember kids, the delta between how the job sounds on paper and the reality of being a globe-trotting executive can be seismic.
Be careful what you wish for.
I once worked for a small start-up church.
Except that church didn’t stay small, and in my 7 years there I held a total of 14 roles, including starting aftercare homes for minor girls rescued from sex slavery in India and teaching to thousands of people.
I got my MBA in “People” while there.
I thought working for a church would instantly disqualify me from future professional goals. Spoiler alert: it was the best business and management training I’ve ever received in a professional setting.
I was hired by a magazine as a writer but instead bought some 1, 2, 3 Home Depot books and started a design/build firm.
3 years later it was very successful, namely because our contracts weren’t written on McDonald’s napkins and our projects followed a timeline.
After losing the company, I thought my life was over.
That was 14 years ago, and failing early at business continues to be the defining thread among successful entrepreneurs I admire.
I like supporting small companies a little more than big companies, as evidenced by my time with a few great smaller firms.
But I like my own companies most of all.
It wasn't a big revelation or anything.
It was more about remembering that my first failed endeavor didn’t kill me, and that I enjoy leveraging my unique skill set to bring some order to a messy world alongside humans I like and respect.
I hold a BA in Communication and Copywriting from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and I hold a World's Best Dad Certification from my four kids.
Just ask them. They’ll back me up.
